Grieve for Millers Point

'Grieve for Millers Point'

The report below is with many thanks and gratitude from the Millers Point, Dawes Point & The Rocks (Sirius) communities was compiled by Tenant Advocate for Older Persons Tenants Services, Robert Mowbray of The Tenants Union NSW!
Here's an update on Millers Point. Click here. It's called 'It's like leaving your family'.

It provides a link to an article with the same name, hot off the press from Alan Morris of University of Technology Sydney. It tells how the NSW Government is ramping up the pressure on the last remaining residents. There's John Blay's (writer and naturalist) story about living in Millers Point. And thanks to Alex Greenwich, Member for Sydney, for his address this month in the NSW Parliament when he asked the NSW Government to show compassion.

It also updates statistics from this ravaged community. Indeed, this week the total revenue from the sales (including stamp duty) passed the $700 million mark! This is far in excess of the Government's target of $500 million and reinforces Alex Greenwich's call for some compassion for the elderly folk who remain.

Expanded figures on what has happened to the residents follows. These come from a meeting of the Millers Point Estates Advisory Board on 24 May 2017 and updated on 25 May 2015:

399 tenancies in the portfolio. 376 have been vacated. Of the 23 remaining tenancies (numbering 34 tenant and household members) to be relocated:

  • 15 (numbering 22 tenant and household members) are from FACS Housing NSW and remain uncommitted,
  • 1 (numbering 2 tenant and household members) is from Little Real Estate and remains uncommitted, and
  • 7 (numbering 10 tenant and household members) are committed to or in the process of moving. All these 7 are approved for moving outside of Millers Point.
There are 3 tenancies remaining in the Sirius Building (numbering 4 tenant and household members) and all remaining uncommitted.

In summary, at the beginning of the process 579 tenant and household members (in 399 tenancies) were to be relocated. Altogether 555 tenant and household members (in 383 tenancies) have either vacated or are committed to moving, with a further 24 (in 16 tenancies) still uncommitted to moving. 4 ‘Notices of intention to issue a Notice of Termination’ have been served on remaining tenants.

28 properties in Millers Point were set aside for remaining tenants and household members. Of these, 16 are occupied by 14 tenancies.
Of the remaining 12 units, 2 are on hold for a final decision on specific tenants. 10 remain unallocated.

Just 24 people in 16 tenancies left. Grieve for Millers Point.

Come on NSW Government! It's not too late to review the situation and allow the remaining residents to stay, especially the older folk who should be able to age-in-place.

Regards, Robert Mowbray.
