Some of Sydney’s top artists have banded together to support the encumbered Millers Point community in a new exhibition called The Point is.
Opening tonight at Redfern’s 107 Projects, The Point is highlights the historic precinct through the eyes of various artists as a means of peaceful protect to the State Government’s contentious sell-off of Millers Point’s social housing to developers and wealthy buyers.
Curator of the exhibition Cara Martinez said she is thrilled to see so many artists donate their time and resources to be a part of the exhibition.
“Through having this exhibition we are highlighting the plight of the community and we are also showing the history of the area and the valuable role it played for Sydney,” she said.

“We had the idea for the exhibition about 18 months ago but we didn’t have the budget to commission any works and we were wondering how to make it work. Over time we had a number of artists respond to us and offer their time after they heard the reactions from the tenants.“Now we have a big group of individual artists and groups involved including Reg Mombassa who designed the No Surrender Millers Point logo you see all around the area now.”
Reg Mombassa has contributed work to the exhibition.
During the exhibition at 107 Projects visitors will have the opportunity to chat to Millers Point residents as keepers of oral history.
People will also be invited to leave recorded messages of their experience or support, as well as interact with some of the works and become a part of the collage.
The Sirius Tower, Millers Point will be sold off under a government plan.
Millers Point resident Paddi O’Leary still remained hopeful parts of the precinct may be spared.“Brad Hazzard is the first minister to engage in community consultation with the Millers Point Community Working Party, O’Leary said.
“It is clear that the minister is listening to the points being put forward by the Working Party but it’s also clear that there is no change to the process at this stage.
“This exhibition (is) an opportunity to increase public awareness through art as a medium. Art has traditionally been a medium to highlight causes throughout history and to talk about current issues.”
The exhibition is on at 107 Redfern St, Redfern until Sunday, October 11.
